The Country Representative for World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Owen Kaluwa has stated in Accra that WHO key to achieving Universal Health Care (UHC) is to ensure everyone has access to the good health services they need without suffering financial hardship in doing so.

Speaking at the commemoration of 2019 World Health Day in Accra, Dr. Owen said, millions of people in the world still have no access to health care, in fact, about half of the people in the world do not receive the health services they need. According to him, all over the world are making good progress towards the attainment of UHC. “About 100 million people are pushed into extreme poverty each year because of out of pocket spending on health”, he added.

The 7th of April marks the birthday of the World Health Day that was established on 7th April 1948. This has made Ghana to celebrate it to ensure quality healthcare for every Ghanaian. The Deputy Minister for Health and MP for Gomoa West constituency in the Central Region, Hon Alexander K.K Abban also called on Ghanaians to acquire for National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) to get access for Universal Healthcare.

Meanwhile, National Chairman for Coalition of NGOs in Health, Dr. Gabriel Bernaku, also appealed to the government to improve the health care services by making Comprehensive Policy on Universal Health Care Coverage.

An important message to our local communities, where many inhabitants are far away from health care services, such as hospitals or clinics.
